Tandem de chefs
(A Tandem of Conductors)
It is extremely rare to see orchestra conductors,
finicky when it comes to it, give their baton to peers for a part of the
program during a concert. That was however the case in the Maurice-Ravel
Auditorium, during a contemporary music concert performed by the National
Orchestra of Lyons, alternatively conducted by Gilbert Amy and Emmanuel
Krivine.
A 20th century music concert would be more exact as the maestro was precisely
working with the six pieces of Webern's Opus 6. [
]
Gilbert Amy conducted the contemporary part, even though one of the suggested
pieces, Varèse's "Arcana", dated back to 1927. However,
it sounded much more recent than the Lyons premiere of a creation by Jean-Louis
Florenz, world premiered hardly two years before ! [
]
Although composed a good ten years before, "Fluctuante-lmmuable"
by Jean-Claude Eloy appeared as a remarkably more original, personal,
and sensitive piece of music. It is somehow the musical illustration of
a famous debate opposing two Greek philosophers: Heraclitus, a believer
of the idea of the eternal fluctuating of things and beings, and Parmenides,
believer of the idea of eternal immutability. Hence an abundant score
starting with long held notes, switching from an instrumental group to
the next with a fascinating sound continuity before a surge of timbre-groups
frees a changing and diverse chain of energy.
It was appropriate to end the night with the piece of today's music great
ancestor: Edgar Varèse [
]
The National Orchestra of Lyons, strongly consolidated and stimulated
by Gilbert Amy's enthusiasm, gave its best, that is a lot.
